1. Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal
(CAAN)
The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal,
the only regulatory authority of the State
boasts of playing a very catalytic role
in the country's socio-economy and tourism
promotion. Its vision is to make air services
an effective vehicle of high economic
growth through wide scale tourism promotion
and accessibility. Therefore, it is set
to fulfill its mission to ensure safe,
secured, efficient, standard and quality
service in civil aviation and airport
operations.
The primary responsibilities of the Civil
Aviation Authority are to regulate air
commerce in order to promote its development
and safety; operate, promote and develop
civil aviation and a national system of
airport; manage navigable airspace within
the Kingdom of Nepal and regulate air
traffic in the interests of safety and
efficiency; install, operate and maintain
air navigation facilities; and develop
and operate air traffic control and navigation
systems for both civil and military aircraft.
There is network of 47 airports, including
one international and four hub airports.
Three more are under construction.
87 per cent tourists enter Nepal via
Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA).
Following the adoption of a liberal aviation
policy in 1992, construction, expansion
and development of airports have become
more significant in light of substantial
increase in fleet and passenger strength
for which TIA has positioned itself as
a leading centre of aviation in Nepal.
There are 13 international airlines comprising
operating at TIA serving 19 destinations
of 14 countries.
On domestic front 8 airlines are providing
schedule services and 6 companies are
operating helicopter services. There are
also 2 aviation sports companies.
The State has concluded bilateral air
services agreement and MOU with 34 countries
offering an annual share of 2297528 air
seats one way.
Given the backdrop of air traffic demand,
the state embraces an open door policy
to encourage international and or domestic
investors to study the feasibility and
construction of a second international
airport in Nepal.
